As part of the Week of Dialogue, Jacques Offenbach took part in a dialogue session on Tuesday, November 4, organized by Stichting Ik Wil and Eindhoven in Dialoog. These gatherings bring together people from diverse backgrounds to talk and share their stories, aiming to create connection in a time of increasing polarization.
The conversations follow the LSD method – Listen, Summarize, Continue – designed to encourage participants to truly listen to one another and to engage respectfully, even on sensitive topics.
The morning turned out to be deeply meaningful. Within a short time, an open and honest atmosphere emerged, where participants spoke with calm and respect. Difficult subjects were not avoided, and there was genuine attention to everyone’s story. Around the table sat people from various backgrounds. One woman from Afghanistan felt uncertain because of the language barrier, but thanks to the attentiveness of Leyla Kalender, founder of Stichting Ik Wil, she was able to fully participate through the use of a translation app. It created a warm and inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt heard.
Stichting Ik Wil is a social initiative that helps people develop personally and participate more fully in society. The foundation offers language lessons, coaching, work experience programs, and activities focused on meaning and connection, all aimed at helping individuals grow and feel part of the community, regardless of their background.
After the session, Offenbach received a personal tour of the building from Leyla Kalender, exploring a place filled with energy, creativity, and commitment. Out of curiosity, he took a look behind the scenes, even stopping by the art class, where lively painting was underway. There, he learned they are still looking for an art teacher, so anyone interested is warmly invited! The people’s warmth stood out; Offenbach was even invited to stay for lunch but had to move on. The impression of openness and hospitality, however, stayed with him.
Stichting Ik Wil and Eindhoven in Dialoog demonstrate how valuable it is when people from different backgrounds meet and truly engage in dialogue. Their conversation tables are an inspiring example of how open, positive discussions can foster understanding, connection, and hope within the city.
