A Lichthuis for Eindhoven: the first step has been taken!

Good news for Eindhoven’s communities, associations and community organisations! On 3 November, the city council adopted our motion ‘Lights on, doors open!’ This marks a first step towards more suitable, affordable spaces and a Lichthuis for Eindhoven.
The proposal by Eindhoven Voor Elkaar and CDA received 23 votes in favour. We felt great relief and joy: the need for suitable spaces now has a firm place on the agenda. Thank you to all the councillors who voted in favour and made this first step possible!
The Lichthuis: a space to come together in your own way
Organising your own celebration, sharing a meal, making music or holding a meeting with your association: all of these need a suitable place. Yet international communities and other community groups often struggle to find one. Venues are too expensive, unavailable or have facilities and rules that do not meet the needs of their activities.
That is why EVE is working towards a Lichthuis: an affordable, shared space where communities, associations and community organisations can organise their own activities and celebrations, with room for their own customs and traditions. Think of cooking and eating together, cultural celebrations, music and community gatherings. A place whose layout, facilities and arrangements reflect the needs of the people who use it.
What has been agreed?
The adopted motion asks the municipality to investigate what spaces associations and communities need and how existing buildings can be used more effectively. If this does not provide a sufficient solution, a Lichthuis must also be explored.
No building or location has been promised yet. But there is now a clear task to investigate the need for space and look for solutions. We are pleased with this first step and will continue to follow its implementation.
Also submitted: five other proposals
During the budget meeting on the city’s plans and finances for 2027, EVE also submitted proposals for help with the cost of sustainability improvements, fairer municipal taxes, returning public funds when supported housing developments generate additional profits, greater regional control over public transport and taking international risks into account more effectively in municipal decisions. We submitted the last proposal together with Volt.
EVE will keep seeking cooperation with communities, residents, organisations and other parties. Because only by working together can we move forward and make Eindhoven a city where everyone can take part.
Eindhoven Voor Elkaar.
The power of working together.
